Toddler Activities and Their Importance in Child Development

!±8± Toddler Activities and Their Importance in Child Development

The brain of a young child is often likened to soft, moldable clay: Impressionable and receptive. All throughout infancy and early childhood, there are countless neural pathways waiting to be formed. These will affect how well your child interacts with and performs in the world.

The toddler age is a critical time in child development. Variety is of the utmost importance, because different types of toddler activities will stimulate different centers of the brain.

You should either disallow television or strictly limit the amount of time your toddler spends in front of it. TV stimulates the brain, but encourages no use of imagination, interaction or physical activity, and evidence exists that it may cause problems with aggression. Such chronic and high levels of stimulation addicts the brain to television, stagnating healthy learning and development.

Creativity

The creative process plays an extremely important role in child development. Engaging in unstructured creative toddler activities teaches your child how to come up with new ideas and perspectives, and helps them to develop their sense of self and discover their own personal aesthetic tastes. Creative pursuits are also fantastic for development of fine motor control and concentration. You can encourage your toddler by providing tools. Nearly anything may be used to create something, from crayons, finger paint and construction paper to sticks, seeds and beads. You can also make a game of looking for patterns and shapes in things like tiles, wood grain, clouds and shadows.

Reasoning

One of the earliest opportunities for teaching your toddler reasoning skills is when they begin to eat on their own. Foods in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes can be surprising tools for this purpose. You may find your child sorting their foods by logical category: by size, color, type, or shape. This means that your child's brain is learning to distinguish differences and similarities.

Many parents have been frustrated by the endless flow of whats, whys and hows coming from their toddler. However, this is possibly one of the best opportunities to teach reasoning skills. Try to answer their questions honestly and to the best of your ability. If you don't know, say so. Admitting that you don't know something teaches your child that nobody is infallible.

Language

The ability to communicate is necessary to be able to function in society, and the sooner your child learns, the better a start they will have. Some useful toddler activities include reading to your child, talking with them and playing name games where you have them repeat the names of random objects. When your toddler responds correctly, reward him or her with praise.

Exploration

Children are naturally curious and love to explore. Inside the house, in the park, or in your yard, encourage your toddler to look in, under and around things. They will surely find endless things that fascinate them. If you like to garden, let your child help you and put them in charge of moving the worms and other bugs to a safe place. Such activities increase their awareness of the environment, and teach them that the world is a big, diverse place.

Handling Stress As a New Mom

!±8± Handling Stress As a New Mom

Life can be very challenging when you're a new mother. There's so much to think about, so much to get done, and such a needy little person who wants all of your attention! How can you balance everything? The key is to have realistic expectations, take care of your own needs, and establish a base plan of what must be done.

How Much to Expect?

You hear stories of women who have a baby and are right back in the fields working, or moms who have their baby and go grocery shopping and start cooking gourmet meals the next day, know that these situations are not normal. In fact, they're probably not even desirable! There's no need to be a "super-mom" after your baby is born.

The postpartum period is a time to love your baby and get to know him or her. It's not a time to show the world you can go on as if you hadn't just had a baby. Take the time to enjoy your new baby. You're also recovering from birth. Give yourself a few weeks to really just relax. Baby care should be your main priority. Keep up with your baby's needs and let other things that can slide fall to the side for a period of time.

Take Care of Your Needs

Though you should take it easy and not expect too much of yourself, don't give up and stop caring for yourself. It's essential to your own well-being that you take care of yourself while you take care of your child. You may not be making day trips to the spa or spending a couple of hours at the gym every night, but that's okay.

If a morning shower helps you to feel refreshed and ready for the day, that's what you need to do every morning! Put the baby in her swing or bouncy seat and take your shower. If you feel a lot better after you've had a morning snack, make the time to have that snack.

A lot of new moms tend to skip things like meals, showers, and even getting dressed. They're exhausted and these things may take more energy. But it's almost always worth the effort to stick to a regular routine of getting ready for the day - and to keep up with your meals. You'll feel clean and refreshed, ready to run a quick errand or answer the door, and you will have the energy to keep up with a demanding infant. Eating regular meals also keeps your milk supply high.

Make a Plan

Once the early weeks are over you're going to want to see life get more "normal" again. You can make this happen by establishing a base plan. What do you feel needs to be accomplished during the day? What are your plans for housekeeping, cooking, caring for older children, and working (at home or out of the home)? Decide what your expectations for each day are. When my baby was a few weeks old I knew that I wanted to keep the house reasonably neat and I wanted to have time to write every day. I also wanted to be spending some time reading to my older children every day.

The key to making these things happen is to have a plan. Plan a thirty minute period of house cleaning every day. You can work with your baby in a carrier. It will go a long way to helping you feel like you're keeping up with things.

Keep a basket of toys and books nearby for your toddler, or activities your older child can do near you. This helps you feel connected and in-tune with them while you care for your baby.

If your baby naps you can either choose to take a nap with them or you can schedule some work during this time -- I found time to write in the early morning after I'd nursed my baby back to sleep from an early feed (and before my older children get up). A plan and regular routine can really help.

There are different types of workers that may specialize in a specific age group. Some work in centers which allows parents to drop off the their child or children if they are too young for school. After the parents return from work they pick their child and children up from the child care center. Many parents may choose this method rather then having their child spend time alone by themselves with a private household worker, or babysitter. By sending their child to a center this will allow their child to develop socially with other child of the same age.

Private household workers act as the part-time parents and stay at the child's home for them to be taken care off. Families that can afford such in-home child care professional will find them very important to their child's life. Family care providers take care of children at their own house taking on numerous children at once, similar to child care centers. They must really enjoy taking care of children right?

State requirements for private child care only apply if child care workers care for more then a few children.

Those who gained enough experience caring for children at a center, private home, or their own home may advance in their careers by becoming teachers and/or other types of supervisory roles.

The National Child Care Association is one of the leading private child care organizations that focuses on education and training. Others include National Association of Child Care Professionals and
